Lack of Attention As a Cause Of Peer Pressure
We all know how it feels to go through puberty, and we have at one point succumbed to peer pressure. Those who were not able to resist temptations that eventually led to addictions ended up with a not so bright future; compared to those who were guided by their parents, support groups and even religious organizations.
Lucky for the younger generation, many parents are stepping up to the plate and becoming involved in their lives. Those who feel as though they are left to fend for themselves are guided by teachers, guidance counselors, doctors and well-meaning relatives. There are also a lot of ways to combat peer pressure, most of which are readily available in bookstores, public libraries and the internet. Though these may be outdated, there are those that can really help out troubled youngsters and parents.
There's really nothing that can compare to a parent's love and attention. When kids grow up in a steady and comfortable environment; wherein they do not feel the need to go to other people for their wants and needs; they are mostly likely stay on the right path. Those, however, who feel as though they are not part of a family, will end up looking elsewhere for attention. This is a normal reaction as all of us would like to be part of a group, to never be alone or have someone care for us.
Generally, kids would like to be part of a group that enjoys the same hobbies and interests they have. In some cases though, these interests may not be shared by a lot of people, or they might be rejected from the group for whatever reason. This may lead a teen to look for people who will welcome them with open arms and initiate them into their circle. Some may be harmless, but there are those that could literally be a death sentence for children's future; such as drugs, alcohol, gambling and sex.
Teens are more technologically updated than most parents, and they probably have access to a whole lot of information via the world wide web. These resources open doors for them, especially the ones that are taboo in the family circle. Adult movies, for one thing, can be viewed by anyone nowadays. No need to download them, just go to a website and watch streaming videos, view pictures and read stories.
The growing number of broken homes has always been pointed out as a reason why children feel the need to rebel and seek out their own "families". The disruption in the child's daily life, the deficiency of attention and continuous fighting of divorced parents could have drastic effects on any kid's mind. As already stated, we have to continue supporting and prioritizing our children; never letting our personal emotions get in the way of child nurturing.
Our duties as parents are to make certain that we do not exclude our children from our lives; and be the source of their strength, to lead them to the right direction and to be good examples.
