Securing Computers For Our Children
Personal computers in most homes are used by both the parents and children. As parents, we think that our younger kids will not be able to access files that are hidden inside folders. But we should never underestimate our children and their grasp of technology. We should always put their safety and welfare first. So make sure that you computer is free from pornographic materials and other adult content; and this includes browser history, recent documents and the Recycle Bin.
Of course, it's best that parents (especially the fathers) do not use the home computer to store, watch or read adult material on the computer that their children use for school work. This will cut the root of the problem, and you will not have to worry about your teenagers accidentally opening adult movies.
Mothers should also be aware that some materials of no significance to us may have a huge impact on our children. We think that pictures of breastfeeding mothers are normal and safe; but without proper guidance our children may think otherwise. Most especially if these pictures are hidden from plain sight. If you have some pictures, videos and documents that you need for work or for the home, make sure that your children do not have access to your files.
Another way of providing a safe computer for our kids is giving them their own user accounts. Keep their access limited to files that are safe to view. Also, this will give you a chance to find out which of your kids have been downloading and installing unnecessary software, or even watching adult movies.
Keep your password to yourself and never share it with the kids. It's safe to assume that the password will a combination of your kids' names or birthdays, so use something else they will not be able to figure out. And much as we would like to spy on our children, we should also give them our respect and trust. It's easy to just look at their files and see what they are doing; but let's not forget that we should also value their privacy.
Clean up your computer regularly. The Recycle Bin which we often disregard might be full of content that you would not want your kids to see. Clearing your browser's history is also another way to eliminate accidental viewing. The cache, especially the words the computer's ability to automatically finish a word for you, must be cleared as well. While your child may be doing some research for their homework, they might see what you have been searching for in various search engines.
Probably the best solution is to keep the home computer for the children's use. Purchase another desktop or laptop that you and your spouse can use; and put it under lock and key. In this way, the computer in the family room will be kept free of adult content, and you will be able to sleep well at night knowing that you have done what any responsible parent should do.
